The Cold Shot Band. The name conjures up inevitable speculation as to the band's focus. But put those thoughts to rest. This group, based in Orlando, Florida, has a distinctive sound of their own. Among other things, there are subtle but interesting twists in several songs. An unusual intro here, a unexpected turn-around there. The CD features a set of ten original tunes. Instruments include guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums.
Out Of The Icebox is a very loud CD, obviously the way it's intended to be heard. This is a very animated band. Their music is hard-edged, and the overall feel of the CD leans towards rock. However, the music features plenty of excellent, aggressive blues-rock style guitar. There are occasional speed/metal type runs, which are kept to short duration. The vocals are stong, somewhat coarse, and a perfect match for the band's hard style. Good thing. No smooth, soulful crooner would cut it with this band.
The CD opens with Losin You, an excellent hard blues song, featuring an infectious rhythm, and emotionally charged guitar and vocals. Definitely one of the CDs more notable tracks. Like This and Where You Goin are of the upbeat, Texas blues shuffle variety, and both are very good. Work It Out is a rock-ballad of sorts, and the CD's only (relatively) laid back entry. Lovin You True, is the CD's other hard blues song, and is equally as good as the opening track. Wake Up Baby and Speed Of Sound are a fast-paced, blues-rockers (emphasis on rock). The last two songs, as well as Show Some Love, are basic rock songs.
This CD ranks right at the top among the independent releases that I've heard. But if you don't have a fondness, or at least a tolerance for rock you will quite possibly disagree with me. This is a tight, energetic band featuring powerful, aggressive guitar and vocals. Out Of The Icebox mixes rock and blues in a way that should appeal to those that are fans of both styles.
Since this CD was recorded, The Cold Shot Band replaced two of its members and has a new sound that is more blues, less rock. ...Herm
